I did Yoga this morning and for some reason it was super killer. I think mostly because today I decided to not let myself get out of doing it the right way. For example, I bend my knees a lot to ease the stretch. Nope, not this time. It was killer. But I felt like I got a better work out which is what I've been wanting.
Alright guys. I need your help. We need to talk about food. I know that eating right is an important part of running but I just...hate....doing that. And it's not like I'm stuffing my face full of snickers baking cookies after a run. You wanna know how I got so fat? Burrito's. Taco Bell, La Fiesta, Alberto's. Gosh, Ryan and I used to live off those things. The second thing that got me fat? Um, enormous amounts of top ramen. ENORMOUS AMOUNTS! Your body can only handle so much!
I hate eating. Obviously I eat or else I wouldn't be a million pounds, but I absolutely hate it. No, I don't want to steam that broccoli. No, I don't want to cook that fish or unthaw that damn chicken. I want an instant burrito and I want maybe 5. Just kidding I've never eaten that much.
It's not that I don't enjoy healthy foods. I really do. I love veggies, and fish, and fruits. I love them all, they just take so much preparation, and washing, and cooking, and thawing, and alsdkjga;lsdkgja;sldkgjas;ldjgasgd. I hate it. I HATE planning my meals.
So please friends. PLEASE comment below with your wisdom. If I can get up at 5 am and run, I should be able to unthaw that damn chicken and bake it or something. It's odd that jogging isn't my great mental battle. It's the food. Food is a lot like a credit card. It's not really something you should be over using, but you do anyway and you downplay how much you've truly bought because $20 at Target and $50 at Nordstrom isn't that much, right? Soon, you've wasted like $500/eaten a trillion calories. But see, my brain sees eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks as completely separate moments that are unrelated to one another. That way, I can say: "I had 5 pancakes with eggs and bacon! Now I'm having four slices of pizza for dinner, but it's not going to make me fat because breakfast was like, a whole other time period away."
It's insane thinking. P.S. I've never eaten that much in a day. I'm for sure over exaggerating.
Now you know the sickness I'm dealing with. Help please?
Oh, I will not do weight watchers. Mostly because I don't have money. So don't even bring it up even though I know their stuff is wicked effective. And if you're skinny, don't give me the skinny person pitty, or the "It's so awesome to be skinny!" speech, because I know you want to and I will kill you, in your sleep, on your birthday if you do. Also, I'm not necessarily looking for weight loss advice because I know what needs to happen. Portion control, and eating things my body can use. What I need is recipes, or tips. And EASY recipes. None of this 8 hour preparation time crap. OH! And If you say the word diet, we wont be friends. I don't do diets. Diets are temporary and stupid. Diet means you got it from a book or that you're doing it to fit into a swim suit. I want to make a life altering change. I'm not doing this for the vanity of it all. I'm doing this for keeps. No fad diets, no HCG, no talking, singing, ZIP. (Name that move).
Am I asking too much? ;)
First. Little Mermaid.
ReplyDeleteSecond. I hate unthawing the D chicken too. We have the same problem. Chicken snack wrap is SO much faster! And I want TWO! I know pinterest is SO cliche, but I have happened to see quite a few "5 minute" recipes on there. Wish I was the one to talk to. It doesn't matter how much time you take on your food, mine is NEVER as good as when I go out. Never as satiating or satisfying. I enjoyed your text of hatred this morning, AND want to say, you are incredible.
I am with you sis. Seriously check out Pinterest. I found some awesome crock pot recipes that are low calories. Also seriously look into green smoothies. I lost a but load of weight doing them. YOu will be amazed at the energy you have, and they DELICIOUS!! Ps its not a diet either. I hate diets they don't work. I agree its a life altering change. If I was under my calorie intake you better believe I had my bowl of ice cream.
ReplyDeleteFish and then pour raw honey on it. bake at 350 for 22 minuets! Thats one of my favorites and its easy! Dont be afraid of carbs. But eat the right ones. Whole wheat and whole grains are a runners best friend. But try not to eat to many after 1pm. Lots of fruit. good natural sugars! Pizza is everyting a runner shouldnt have! But it so good! Trans fats and white bread. Protien three times a day. I know runners world has a good list of foods for runners!
ReplyDeleteWe did livestrong.com for a while. It is A-MAZ-ING. It's not so much dieting as it is just calorie counting. Sam stuck with it for a while and it really did the trick. You just register with the website (completely free) and put in some weight goals and it tells you how many calories you can consume in a day. You can eat whatever the heck you want but just not go over your cal count. The best part is you enter in when you exercise and it ups your count! more cals! yeah! You enter in every single thing you eat and it helps you see how many cals you have left that day. Kinda tedious at first but once you get the hang of how many cals are in a lot of foods, you dont really need the site.
ReplyDeletealso we like doing frozen dinners like lean cuisine, healthy choice and even some marie calenders. Good home cooked meal without doing the work. and they count the cals for you already. Nice break sometimes from cooking.
I find I am much more likely to eat healthy if it doesn't take time. If you are lazy, just anticipate yourself by having some simple snacks ready to go. Just tonight I did my usual bag of carrots that I chop into sticks and shoved them in a ziplock. I also shredded a head of iceberg and romaine and shoved that unto a ziplock. As stupid as it may seem, with it right there, I find myself throwing lettuce more into everything or even just throw a little dressing in it. That may be a good simple place to start before taking on what feels like endless healthy meal preparations.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I share your love of Mexican food. I know I can't go without a big tasty burrito, but I can cut down. Then during the cut down time I make up "tacos" where I use a leaf of romaine instead of a shell and throw on low fat sour cream, fresh chopped onion and cilantro, some salsa, some refried beans I heated in the microwave, and if I am not super lazy, a little low fat meat. I promise you it tastes good and hardly takes effort.
Oh and when it comes to cooking, maybe try totaling up how much $ you spend on eating out vs. how much $ groceries cost to eat at home. I mean really sitting down and looking at how much you spend in a week/month/year on buying burritos and pizza etc. I know that reeeally changed my views about cooking and eating at home. So maybe start thinking of it from a more logical point of view rather than some sort of connection with taste. I dunno. just a thought to change your perspective a little.
ReplyDeleteDitto to the green smoothies thing. (I put a status on my Facebook page about them a while ago, and I put our "recipe" on there.) You can even have them twice a day. It's an easy way to get a huge dose of low-calorie fresh fruits and veggies, and all you have to do is shove it in a blender and mix. I usually make enough for two days (a whole blender full for Tim and me) so that I only have to make it every other day. I stick some protein powder in mine if I drink it after I exercise.
ReplyDeleteI also think keeping a food log is a great idea, especially if you tend to lose track of what you have eaten during the day, like you said.
And the biggest thing for us has just been not having the junk in the house. AT ALL. If it's there, I will eat it. If there are convenient, non-healthy foods in the house, then I will choose those. If all I have is the chicken and the veggies and the whole grain stuff, then those are my only options when I'm hungry. If I want to eat, then I have to eat those. If we want junk, we have to go outside the house to get it, and that can take more time and be less convenient (not always, but you get the idea). That means I have to be the one to make the right choices at the store, which doesn't always happen, but I'm getting better!
Another thing I learned from Biggest Loser is to allow yourself your few indulgences. They actually get one cheat meal a week where they get to eat whatever they want. If you are denying yourself ALL. THE. TIME then you are more likely to fail. If you know that being really good all week long means you get a treat at the end of the week, then you are more likely to succeed. And it's actually also good for your metabolism because it revs it back up after all the low-calorie eating.
Anyway...those are just a few things we have been working on lately. Probably way more than you wanted!
Oh and tonight I also chopped up a bunch a fresh fruit and threw it in a container and I have a big container of vanilla yogurt. Then when I want something sweet I mix some up together. Just pick a time to do simple prep and then be done. And I just realized I have granola that I can throw on too. Dang it, now I made myself hungry.
ReplyDeleteCook once a week. After church. Freeze or refridgerate meals already portioned out. During the week--no thinking required. Just push reheat, wait for the ding, and eat. SO worth it.
ReplyDeleteHi dear. (Yes, I blog stalk you.) One of my friends (who I also blog stalk) just posted about her families new attempts to get healthy with food and exercise. Usually I roll my eyes at most diet schemes, because honestly, they don't work and are more harmful than helpful. However, I liked her strategy because it is a life style change.
ReplyDeleteHere's the first post: http://poodlewrites.blogspot.com/2012/02/at-end-of-last-summer-i-found-myself.html
And here's what her husband had to say about it: http://poodlewrites.blogspot.com/2012/02/guest-post-from-guy-who-lost-40-pounds.html
You're lovely. And I miss you. The end. :)
Thanks Hannabeth! I haven't looked at the links yet but I'm planning to this weekend. P.S. I spent an entire day at work looking at your blog. An entire day. That's a whole day of getting paid to look at your blog and it was completely awesome. I want to eat one of your pies!
